TASTE OF ITALY // DISCOVERING FLORENCE

A Journey Through Art, History, and Tuscan Charm

Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, is a city that seamlessly blends history, art, and vibrant Italian culture. Tucked away in the rolling hills of Tuscany, this enchanting city is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be uncovered. On days 4, 5 and 6 of the Taste of Italy Experience, we will engulf ourselves in Florence and the Tuscan countryside. After we check in to the Sina Villa Medici Autograph Hotel, we have a packed three days of adventures. We start out with a reception on the first night with a pub crawl, then a pasta making class with unlimited wine, a vineyard tour and we cap it off at a prvate home in Tuscany where we will make our own dinner with a chef while we sip on wine from their vineyard. If you can't join us for our trip, keep this guide handy for the best things to do in Florence, Italy.

1. Marvel at the Duomo and Climb to the Top

No visit to Florence is complete without standing in awe of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, also known as the Duomo. Its striking red-tiled dome, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, dominates the skyline. Take a challenging but rewarding climb to the top for panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Tuscan countryside. Don’t miss the intricate frescoes inside the dome, painted by Giorgio Vasari.

2. Lose Yourself in the Uffizi Gallery

Step into the Uffizi Gallery, one of the world’s renowned art museums, and enjoy the works of Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci. Highlights include Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus and Primavera. Plan your visit early in the morning or book skip-the-line tickets to make the most of your time.

3. Stroll Across the Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio, Florence’s iconic medieval bridge, is a romantic spot lined with charming jewelry shops. As the Arno River reflects the warm hues of the sunset, this becomes one of the most picturesque places in the city. Venture to the nearby Oltrarno district for a more authentic and artisanal vibe.

4. Explore the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens

Once the residence of the powerful Medici family, the Pitti Palace offers a glimpse into Florence’s opulent past. The sprawling Boboli Gardens, just behind the palace, are perfect for a leisurely stroll, featuring beautifully landscaped paths, fountains, and sculptures.

5. Admire Michelangelo’s David

A visit to the Galleria dell’Accademia to see Michelangelo’s David in all its glory is a must. This masterpiece is a testament to the genius of the Renaissance. Don’t overlook the museum’s other treasures, including unfinished works by Michelangelo that offer a glimpse into his creative process.

6. Delve into Florence’s Culinary Scene

Florence is a paradise for food lovers. Sample traditional Tuscan dishes like bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florentine steak) or pappa al pomodoro (tomato and bread soup). Pair your meal with a glass of Chianti wine. We have several authentic dinners and private dining experiences planned for our visit to Florence on the Taste of Italy Experience in March of 2025.

7. Take in the Views at Piazzale Michelangelo

For a breathtaking panoramic view of Florence, head to Piazzale Michelangelo. The square offers a sweeping vista of the city’s iconic landmarks, including the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio. It’s especially magical during sunset when the city is bathed in golden light.

8. Visit the Basilica of Santa Croce

The Basilica of Santa Croce, often referred to as the Temple of the Italian Glories, is the final resting place of notable figures like Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli. The interior is adorned with stunning frescoes by Giotto, making it a peaceful and inspiring place to visit.

9. Shop at Mercato Centrale

Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Mercato Centrale, a bustling food market where you can sample local cheeses, meats, and truffles. The upstairs food court is a foodie’s dream, offering a variety of stalls serving everything from handmade pasta to wood-fired pizza.

10. Take a Day Trip to the Tuscan Countryside

Florence is the gateway to Tuscany’s rolling hills and vineyards. Take a short drive or tour to nearby towns like Chianti, San Gimignano, or Siena. Enjoy wine tastings, olive oil samplings, and breathtaking views of the countryside. We will be visiting Tuscan countryside twice on our tour, one for a vineyard and the second for a private dining experience in a Tuscan Villa.

Final Thoughts

Florence is a city that lingers in your heart long after you’ve left. Its cobblestone streets, awe-inspiring art, and warm Tuscan spirit make it a destination that brings travelers back time and time again. Florence is a journey of discovery that promises unforgettable memories.
